05/03/2010: LE CRUNCH TIME! DUBLIN SCHOOL SCOOPS NATIONAL RADIO ADVERTISING AWARD!

DUBLIN STUDENTS TAKE TOP AWARD IN
LE CRUNCH SOUND BITES!
Post Primary Student Radio Ad Awards

..in association with The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show on Today FM!

Having pared their way through nearly 400 entries, the judging panel for the inaugural Le Crunch Soundbites Post Primary Student Radio Ad Awards announced their top pick on Today FM’s Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show this morning (Friday March 5th). Second year students Leah Kearney and Naomi Lynch from Margaret Aylward Community College in Whitehall in Dublin pipped seven other finalists to top spot in the competition, which saw students from across Ireland writing and producing radio advertisements to promote the healthy benefits of Le Crunch apples. The Ballymun duo made their thirty second radio advertisement under the guidance of music teacher Michael Major.

One of the judges, Dylan Cotter, copywriter with leading Irish advertising agency Irish International BBDO, announced the winning entry and explained that their original storyline, teamed with superb acting and a very strong positive message, had given the Margaret Aylward ladies the edge over their competition. Leah and Naomi now each receive a top of the range Nikon S1000PJ Coolpix digital camera, the first camera in the world with a built in projector. Margaret Aylward Community College will also receive €2,000 worth of multimedia vouchers, which can be spent on equipment to benefit all students attending the school.

Speaking after the announcement, school Principal Mary Friel said: "We are all celebrating the fantastic achievement of two of our second year students, Naomi Lynch and Leah Kearney. All the staff and students are delighted. We are a small school of 260 students and we take huge pride in the fact that we provide our girls with a rounded education. Being a City of Dublin Vocational Education school, we cater for young people of all ability levels and all our students are equally valued. We see the developing of life skills and a love of learning as equally important as academic success. In making the Le Crunch advertisements, our students learnt how to use new technologies, while developing self directed learning skills and most importantly, they learnt to work as a team, sharing equipment and planning together".

There were also three runners up teams in the Le Crunch Sound Bites! competition, with each team member awarded a Nikon S220 Coolpix Digital Camera. They are Conor Cunniffe and Willow Howe from Carrick-on-Shannon Community School in Leitrim for their high energy sales pitch, William O'Broin, Brian Mac Gloinn and Orna Ni Dhocartaigh from Gaelcholaiste Cheatharlach in Carlow for their brilliant rap How D’Ye Likes Dem Apples and Derek Cleary, Ross McMahon and Daryl Troy from Killina Presentation Secondary School in Offaly for their humorous and cleverly scripted ad Ull La La.

All eight ads can still be heard at www.ouitolecrunch.com
